2012 Volcano Pottery Sale
Join 11 Big Island potters for the 4th Annual Volcano Pottery Sale on June 9th & 10th. The sale will be held over the Kamehameha weekend at Hale Ho'omana, the education building of the Volcano Art Center, located on their Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Hours for the sale will be from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
This year we have 3 new potters, Shannon Hickey, Jan Bovard and Tim Johnson, joining the 8 potters that participated in last year's sale. Shannon Hickey is the owner of High Fire Hawai'i Gallery and Studio in Hilo. Jan Bovard has been creating pottery for many years in her Holualoa studio in West Hawaii. And Tim Johnson studied ceramics in California and now works out of his studio in Pahoa on the east side of the Big Island.
Potters returning from last year's sale include Clayton Amemiya, TR Andrews, Birgitta Frazier, Ron Hanatani, Emily Herb, Chiu Leong, Jamie Stokes* and Carol Yamashita. For all of these ceramic artists, working with clay is a way of life and their styles are diverse and unique. Pottery from low-fired Raku to high-fired porcelain will be on display and for sale, including both functional and sculptural work.
Don't miss this opportunity to see the work of so many highly skilled potters and ceramicists in one location, and to meet the artists. The Niaulani Campus of the Volcano Art Center is located in the cool rainforest surroundings of Volcano Village, creating a serene environment in which to enjoy the finely handcrafted wares.
Samples of fine Volcano grown teas will also be available for tasting courtesy of Tea Hawaii. There is plenty of free parking at the Niaulani Campus, and more information is available by calling 985-8530.
* Unfortunately Jamie Stokes had to withdraw from this year's sale but we are fortunate to have Tim Freeman join us on short notice. Tim works out of his studio in Volcano Village specializing in pit fired ceramics.

2010 Volcano Pottery Sale
The 2nd Annual Volcano Pottery Sale will be held on Saturday, June 12 from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm at the Volcano Garden Arts gallery in Volcano Village. Please join Emily Herb and Ron Hanatani as they feature their latest creations for sale. The following is a brief bio of Emily Herb.
Emily Herb was born in the Midwest, but has lived in diverse areas such as Utah, Alaska, Arizona, Seattle and Hawai’i. Her work has always been inspired by the natural world, and by birds in particular. Since moving to Hawai'i in 1998, her work has focused mainly on birds and plants found in the Islands.
Emily and her husband moved to Volcano Village in 2007, where she set up the pottery studio that she now works in. Just a few miles from Hawai’i Volcanos National Park, Volcano Village is located in the native rainforest at 3800' elevation. The forest is home to several native bird species that are still fairly common, including the bright red 'apapane, whose varied songs can be heard throughout the day from the pottery studio, thus the name of her studio, ‘Apapane Pottery.
